On a Spectral Flow Formula for the Homological Index

چکیده
Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t) | t ∈ R} that converges in norm to asymptotes A± at ±∞. Then under certain conditions [RoSa95] that include the assumption that the operators {D(t) = D + A(t), t ∈ R} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path {D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of ∂t+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L(R, H). In [GLM11] an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spectrum was started but under restrictive assumptions that rule out differential operators in general. In [CGP13] the question of what happens when the Fredholm condition is dropped altogether was investigated. In these circumstances the Fredholm index is replaced by the Witten index. In this paper we take the investigation begun in [CGP13] much further. We show how to generalise a formula known from the setting of the L index theorem to the non-Fredholm setting. Restricting back to the case of selfadjoint Fredholm operators our formula extends the result of [RoSa95] in the sense of relaxing the discrete spectrum condition. It also generalises some other Fredholm operator results of [Pus08, GLM11, CGP13] that permit essential spectrum for the operators in the path. Our result may also apply however when the operators {D(t)} have essential spectrum equal to the whole real line. Our main theorem gives a trace formula relating the homological index of [CaKa14] to an integral formula that is known, for a path of selfadjoint Fredholms with compact resolvent and with unitarily equivalent endpoints, to compute spectral flow. Our formula however, applies to paths of selfadjoint non-Fredholm operators. We interpret this as indicating there is a generalisation of spectral flow to the non-Fredholm setting.

This paper presents a remarkable formula for spectral distance of a given block normal matrix $G_{D_0} = begin{pmatrix} A & B \ C & D_0 end{pmatrix} $ to set of block normal matrix $G_{D}$ (as same as $G_{D_0}$ except block $D$ which is replaced by block $D_0$), in which $A in mathbb{C}^{ntimes n}$ is invertible, $ B in mathbb{C}^{ntimes m}, C in mathbb{C}^{mti...
متن کاملSpectral Quasi-linearization for MHD Nanofluid Stagnation Boundary Layer Flow due to a Stretching/Shrinking Surface
This article concentrates on the effect of MHD heat mass transfer on the stagnation point nanofluid flow over a stretching or shrinking sheet with homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions. The flow analysis is disclosed in the neighborhood of stagnation point. Features of heat transport are characterized with Newtonian heating. The homogeneous-heterogeneous chemical reaction between the fluid and di...
متن کاملDirac Index Classes and the Noncommutative Spectral Flow
We present a detailed proof of the existence-theorem for noncommutative spectral sections (see the noncommutative spectral flow, unpublished preprint, 1997). We apply this result to various index-theoretic situations, extending to the noncommutative context results of Booss– Wojciechowski, Melrose–Piazza and Dai–Zhang. In particular, we prove a variational formula, in K * ðC r ðGÞÞ; for the ind...
متن کاملA Pairing between Super Lie-rinehart and Periodic Cyclic Homology
We consider a pairing producing various cyclic Hochschild cocycles, which led Alain Connes to cyclic cohomology. We are interested in geometrical meaning and homological properties of this pairing. We define a non-trivial pairing between the homology of a Lie-Rinehart (super-)algebra with coefficients in some partial traces and relative periodic cyclic homology. This pairing generalizes the ind...
متن کاملOn a Formula for the Spectral Flow and Its Applications
We consider a continuous path of bounded symmetric Fredholm bilinear forms with arbitrary endpoints on a real Hilbert space, and we prove a formula that gives the spectral flow of the path in terms of the spectral flow of the restriction to a finite codimensional closed subspace. We also discuss the case of restrictions to a continuous path of finite codimensional closed subspaces. As an applic...
